QUASQUICENTENNIAL

125th for Cando, North Dakota

July 2nd through July 5th, 2009

Hi everyone!

We are trying things different this year and have reviewed a lot of suggestions from past reunions and gatherings of sorts.  A big concern was having ample time for people to “gather and socialize”.  In the spirit of accommodating this you will notice on the tentative schedule there is ample open time for this purpose.

Registration and securing enough donations to pay for things seemed to be a big problem.  So, we eliminated the registration process, as we really want everyone to come home and help us celebrate.  As far as donations, well I am sorry to say we could not eliminate this factor, but it is exactly as it says in the one word, a donation.  Please consider a $10.00 donation (more if you can).

Why do we need donations?  One suggestion was to let the people know, so we will attempt that.

Some of the projected costs are:

            Postage                                    1200.00 (per mailing)

            Friday music                             1500.00

            Saturday Music                        3000.00

            Tractor Pulls                             1800.00

            Souvenirs                                 2500.00

            Moving Wall Memorial 4500.00

Miscellaneous                             400.00

We will set up an information booth and sell souvenirs in the armory, there will be guest books there for people to sign if they desire.

We have secured the use of the Armory for the 4-day event and we plan to have tables and chairs set up for people to congregate.  This building and the Ice Arena will serve for use in case of inclement weather.

Be sure to see the new multi use floor in the arena, and stop by the Audi to see the new bathrooms, plus the Audi Committee is trying to get some type elevator for travel between the floors.  The pioneer Foundation and City Hall has been made handicap accessible.  Improvements are being made and strived for constantly in efforts to keep our area alive.

We plan on another mailing if one is needed, and we will be adding to the Cando website as well as the one Marilyn Morgan (as we know her best) maintains.

Please plan on being with us and mark your calendars so you can plan your vacation time early.

Donations should be made out to “Cando 125th” and mailed to:  PO Box 44, Cando, ND 58324.

VARIETY SHOW

A Variety Show, sponsored by the Cando Arts Council, is being planned in conjunction with Cando's 125th birthday party! We would like to invite Cando alumni (and possibly non-alumni) to participate in the show. Approximately twenty numbers will be featured, each one of 3-4 minutes in duration. There will be an "abbreviated" run-through at the Audi on Friday morning, July 3, 2009 at 9:30 with performances Friday afternoon at 3:00 and Friday evening at 7:00.

Need an accompanist? Someone will play for you,if the music is sent to either Karen or Babe.

If you would like to participate, please contact Babe Belzer, 1-701-968-4419, email bbelzer@stellarnet.com or mail to 7455 Hwy. 281 N., Cando, ND 58324

OR

Karen Braaten: 1-701-968-3738, email klgbraaten@yahoo.com or mail to710 5th Ave., Cando, ND 58324.

The deadline for entering your number for the Variety Show is April 1, 2009. Also, if ample interest is shown, an alumni choir will rehearse/perform during the Variety Show. Please consider adding to the fun of the 125th birthday party by entertaining friends and relatives. As some of you know, the Audi is a great place to perform!

JOURNEY STORIES

The Cando Pioneer Foundation/Museum located in the “old bank building” on the corner of 5th Avenue and Main Street has many items displayed on the main floor, which is shared with the Cando City Offices including the Police Department.  The upper level consists of 10 rooms depicting early years in Cando.

From May 30th, 2009 through July 11, 2009 on display will be the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum on Main Street traveling exhibit, “Journey Stories”.  This modular exhibition tells a diverse story focused on immigration, migration, innovation, and freedom, using engaging images with audio and artifacts telling individual stories.

This is a walk through “at your own pace” exhibit and may be viewed at any time it is open to best fit your schedule.  There are no set start and stop times and is suitable for family viewing.  We are also working on stories of a few local families and their journey to Cando to be on display at the same time.

We are very proud that Cando was chosen to be the first venue in the United States to have this exhibit.

ARTS CENTER

We have scheduled a photo show by Mark Fox, “IMAGES OF SPORTS”.  He will bring it, hang it, and mind the gallery.

We have a large space and could accommodate some photos from other people too.  I would assume that we would not be inundated with too many photos.  If other people want to hang some of their work they must contact Shelly Lord, 701-968-3655, 1115 4th Ave, Cando, ND 58324 and furnish their name, phone number, address, email address, with the number of photos with the size of framed work.

The photos must be ready for hanging with wire (no saw toothed hangers).  They must be hand delivered and picked up at the end of the show.  They must come with labels and the Artist must be prepared to take a turn at minding the gallery.

We reserve the right to close the show if we have too many images.  There will be no insurance coverage.  The photographers must insure their own work.  If photos are for sale the Arts Center charges 10% commission.  We reserve the right to reject images that are in bad taste.

We need the information by May 1, 2009.
